Yoel Greenberg Viola

Dr. Yoel Greenberg is a lecturer in the department of music at Bar-Ilan University. His research draws on systems theory to explain the emergence and evolution of sonata form. Further research concerns music, literature and the arts in the early 20th century. He has published on a variety of subjects in leading journals such as Journal of Musicology, Journal of Music Theory (forthcoming), Music and Letters, Proceedings of the American Association of Artificial Intelligence and Min-Ad. Yoel studied violin with Walter Reiter, Rimma Kaminkovsky, Prof. David Chen and Orah Shiran. He served as an officer in the IDF, and holds a B.Sc. in Mathematics and Computer Science with honors and a PhD in musicology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His post-doctoral research was carried out in the departments of music and evolutionary biology at Princeton University. Besides his academic research, Yoel devotes much time and energy to public lecturing about music, and has presented concerts in venues throughout Israel and abroad. He has performed as a soloist with orchestras throughout Israel, including the Hillel Symphony Orchestra, the Tel Aviv Soloists and others. A member of the Carmel Quartet since November 2003, Yoel has received numerous prizes and scholarships in both research and performance, including a research grant from the Israel Science Foundation, a Fulbright award, a Rotenstreich fellowship, a Tikvah fellowship, a Hoffman scholarship and second prize in the viola category in the 2004 Aviv Competitions.
